Oracle OpenWorld 2009: less crowded, not less busy

by Douwe Pieter van den Bos on October 13, 2009 · 1 comment

This years Oracle OpenWorld is, to be short, a blast. The crowds are lot less than last years OOW, but there still is lots and lots to be done. The news-flashes just keep rolling in and sessions are more in-depth than ever. With over 1900 session in only a few days it’s hard to make choices, what do I really want to know now? What are the most important innovations that took place that couple of last days? These are the issues an Oracle OpenWorld attendee has to overcome.

With a decrease of attendees of about 25% this year, you would think that OOW has become less busy, the opposite is true. Because Oracle is in the process of owning Sun Microsystems, and us loving both Oracle and Java, there’s enough to be done here for me and my colleague (recently voted Java Developer of the year and Oracle ACE!!!) Edwin Biemond. The big news this week has been, so far, that the Sun Oracle Exadata V2 Database Machine (they should think of a shorter name for that thing) challenges every other machine in the world. In fact, during a pretty weird but cool, keynote session, Larry Ellison challenged IBM in a 10 million dollar race on benchmarks. This, of course, is just one of the great things we can expect from the Oracle / Sun combination.

During a lot of session there’s been a great hum about the integration of Sun’s technologies into the Oracle Stack. That means that not only hardware and software components will be completely integrated witch each other, but also that the combination of other technologies, like Java and Glassfish, will make Oracle technologies better. Larry Ellison also announced that all Sun products will be innovated a lot by the Oracle Corporation, because he doesn’t want to sell off parts of the Sun company after he buys it.

During this extremely ravishing week we will learn a lot about the possibilities that the combination of those two great companies can offer us. Too bad that there’s nothing they actually dare talk about, because the deal isn’t quite finished….
